Traveling by car in Slovakia offers freedom and flexibility, whether it's for daily commuting, weekend trips, or long-term journeys. However, for a smooth and trouble-free ride, it's crucial to know what documents you must always have with you in the car. Lack of knowledge or negligence in this area can lead to unnecessary fines and complications. This article will provide a comprehensive overview of both mandatory and recommended documents, with an emphasis on current rules for 2026 and specifics for those using rental services. For a practical transport solution, long-term car rental is also relevant.
When renting a vehicle from BLS, you can be sure that all necessary vehicle documents are current and in order. Your only concern is to have valid personal documents with you. If you are looking for a reliable vehicle for short-term or long-term needs, browse our offer of rental vehicles in Bratislava, or consider flexible long-term car rental.
Why is it important to have the correct documents in the car?
Traffic rules are clear: the driver must carry valid documents. This requirement is not just a bureaucratic obstacle, but a fundamental prerequisite for your safety and the safety of other road users. Police checks are a common part of travel, and in case of missing or invalid documents, fines are imposed. Related details are also discussed in the article information about fines for invalid STK and EK.
Legal requirements and your safety
Act No. 8/2009 Coll. on Road Traffic and on Amendments and Supplements to Certain Acts clearly stipulates what documents a driver must carry. These documents confirm that you are authorized to drive the vehicle and that the vehicle is technically capable of operation. Their absence not only jeopardizes your legal position but may also indicate neglect of the vehicle's technical condition.
Fines and inconveniences during a road check
Forgetting car documents can have financial consequences. Fines for missing documents can amount to tens or hundreds of euros, and in serious cases, even lead to a ban on driving. In addition to financial penalties, you will also face delays and inconveniences with police authorities. It is therefore in every driver's interest to check the completeness of documents before driving.
Mandatory documents that the driver must carry
Every driver in Slovakia must carry several basic personal documents when driving a vehicle. These serve to prove identity and authorization to drive a motor vehicle. For a practical transport solution, car rental in Bratislava is also relevant.
Driving license
The absolute basic. Without a valid driving license with the appropriate category for the given vehicle, you may not legally drive. It is important to regularly check its validity and renew it in time if necessary. You can only drive a vehicle that belongs to the group corresponding to your driving entitlement.
Identity document (ID card or passport)
Although the Road Traffic Act does not directly require a driver to carry an ID card, police officers are authorized to request it at any time to prove your identity. Therefore, it is always advisable to have it with you. A valid passport is an equivalent identity document under the law.
Proof of compulsory contractual insurance (PZP) - Green Card (also in electronic form)
Compulsory contractual insurance is mandatory by law for every motor vehicle. The insurance document serves as proof that you have concluded PZP, which covers you in the event of a traffic accident caused to third parties. As of January 1, 2025, its validity can also be proven in electronic form. The electronic version of the Green Card is a full-fledged document not only in Slovakia but also in 47 other member countries of the Council of Bureaux (COB). Nevertheless, the ministry and the Slovak Insurers' Bureau recommend carrying a paper version at least until mid-2025, until the electronic version is fully established in practice.
Vehicle documents that are mandatory
In addition to personal documents, specific documents relating directly to the vehicle are also mandatory. Related details are also discussed in the relevant blog article.
Vehicle Registration Certificate - Part I (Small Technical Certificate)
This document, in the form of a plastic card, is crucial. It contains important information about the vehicle such as registration number, VIN code, type, and color. The small technical certificate is the most important vehicle document that you must always have physically in the car. The good news is that you no longer need to carry separate proof of STK and EK - these data are directly in the small technical certificate.
Validity of the small technical certificate
Pay attention to the validity of the small technical certificate. Small technical certificates issued between 2011 and 2021 may have had limited validity, which is stated directly on the card. The holder is obliged to replace the technical certificate with a new one at the traffic inspectorate or client center within 30 days of the expiry of its validity. New documents issued after December 2021 no longer have limited validity. A fine of 30 euros is imposed for an invalid small technical certificate.
Documents on completed technical and emission control (STK and EK)
These documents confirm that your vehicle meets all safety and emission standards. The validity of these documents is limited, usually to two years after the first inspection after four years from the first registration of the vehicle. It is important to renew them in time to avoid fines. Although the data are in the small technical certificate, police officers may still require paper confirmations, so it is advisable to have them with you.
Special documents for certain drivers
Some drivers must also carry additional documents. This includes, for example, a document on health and psychological fitness, which is required from drivers over 65 years of age and from professional drivers. These confirmations must be in physical, i.e., paper form. In certain cases, a permit for special use of public roads may also be required (e.g., for oversized transport). All vehicles in our fleet available for rental have complete and valid technical documents, including PZP and completed STK and EK inspections.
Which documents not to have in the car (and why)
Not all documents are meant to be constantly carried in the car. Some are better left at home.
Vehicle Registration Certificate - Part II (Large Technical Certificate)
This A4-sized document contains detailed technical data about the vehicle. It is not necessary to have it with you in the car while driving. It is an official document that is safe if you keep it at home. It is essential for administrative acts with the vehicle, such as transfer, deregistration, or during technical and emission control.
Why it is safe to leave the large technical certificate at home
It is strongly recommended not to carry the large technical certificate in the car. In the event of vehicle theft, this document would significantly facilitate its export abroad and subsequent legalization by the thief. In some cases, the joint presence of both the large and small technical certificates in the car may even be a reason for a fine by a police patrol. As a vehicle renter, for example from the BLS offer, you do not have to worry about the large technical certificate. This document is safely stored with us, minimizing the risk of misuse and simplifying your drive.
Digitization of documents: Modern solutions for 2026
The modern era brings with it digitization, which simplifies administrative processes also in the area of documents.
Electronic driving license and eID in mobile
As of April 15, 2025, a system is accessible that allows the activation and storage of ID and driving licenses directly on a smartphone via the eIDENTITA and eDOKLADY applications. For full use, a smartphone with Android 9 or newer or iOS 16.6 or newer is required. This significantly simplifies the proving of identity and driving authorization.
Electronic Green Card for PZP
As of January 1, 2025, the validity of compulsory contractual insurance can also be proven in electronic form. Insurance companies send the Green Card to clients in PDF format, and it is sufficient to show it from a mobile phone. Nevertheless, it is recommended to carry a paper version until mid-2025, until the electronic form is fully established in practice.
What to do in case of loss or theft of documents
Losing car documents or personal documents can be stressful, but it is important to act quickly and according to the correct procedure.
Procedure for loss of personal documents (driving license, ID card)
If you lose your driving license or ID card, immediately report the loss to the police or electronically via the slovensko.sk portal. After reporting, you will receive a confirmation that temporarily replaces the lost document. You apply for a new driving license at the traffic inspectorate.
Procedure for loss of vehicle documents (Small Technical Certificate)
The loss of a small technical certificate is serious. This fact must be reported immediately to the relevant traffic inspectorate. The loss is resolved by issuing a duplicate, for which you will need an ID card, a large technical certificate (Part II), and possibly an affidavit of loss. During the period between the loss and the issuance of a new document, you may not use the vehicle on public roads, as driving without this document is an offense. If you lose the small technical certificate for a vehicle you have rented, immediately contact our customer support. We will help you with reporting and securing a replacement solution.
Importance of quick reporting
Prompt reporting of lost documents is crucial to minimize the risk of their misuse and to quickly obtain duplicates so that you can resume driving as soon as possible without unnecessary complications.
Most common fines for missing or invalid documents
Forgotten car documents or personal documents can have significant financial consequences.
Fines for forgotten personal documents
If you do not have mandatory documents with you during a check (driving license, small technical certificate, ID card, or Green Card), you can receive an on-the-spot fine of up to €30, and in administrative proceedings, this amount can go up to €100. Drivers without a driving license face fines from €300 to €1,300 and a ban on driving for 1 to 5 years.
Fines for invalid vehicle documents (Small Technical Certificate, STK/EK)
A fine of 30 euros is imposed for an invalid small technical certificate. In the case of an invalid technical and emission control, a fine of up to 165 euros can be imposed for each control separately, which can be up to 330 euros for both invalid controls. More detailed information about fines for invalid STK and EK can be found in our blog article.
